The Story:

Firstly, I hand-select all my fabrics in Japan because I was an exchange student in Hirakatashi (halfway between Kyoto and Osaka) during university. So just after I started making project bags, I looked into importing Japanese fabrics through Etsy sellers, which worked for a bit, but was unsustainable for growth. When my husband and I made his first trip over in 2016, I decided that I should look at the cost of fabric while in Japan. And lo and behold, it works out best for me to go directly to Japan to purchase the fabric myself - since I’m not working in wholesale bolts of around 15m! This has the added benefit of not only cutting costs, but also allows me the ability to hold onto the fabrics and assess them instead of trying to decide on them through a computer screen. Rest assured that if you are purchasing through your computer or device screen, these fabrics feel amazing.

As for this bag style…we’ll, it is quite a coup for me, not going to lie! When I started making bags a decade ago, I knew I wanted to have drawstring bags in this style or something by similar. However, I did not yet have the skills to be able to make these bags without considerable effort - and wasted fabric, let’s be honest! So I set it aside in pursuit of other bags that were within my skill set and abilities. When I was daydreaming about what I wanted to see from Atelier Nekozuki this past summer, I decided it was time for a drawstring bag in the style I had desired ten years ago. And my skills had developed enough that I was able to put these bags together in a way that was finally up to my standards for what I wanted them to be! I hope you enjoy.
